Healthcare is a fundamental right that every citizen should have access to. Unfortunately, the reality is that the South African healthcare system is fragmented, under-resourced and characterised by inequality and inefficiency. This is where the National Health Insurance (NHI) comes in.
NHI is a national fund that aims to provide universal
healthcare coverage for all South Africans. It is a bold, ambitious plan that
seeks to address many of the systemic problems that have plagued our healthcare
system for decades. Yet, despite its potential to improve the lives of millions
of people, NHI is often met with fierce opposition and scepticism.
It is a patriotic thing to do
Supporting NHI is not only the right thing to do, but it is also
a patriotic duty. By contributing to a national fund that pays for everyone's
healthcare needs, rich or poor, young and old, black or white, sick or healthy,
we are helping to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous South
Africa. We are ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their income or
social status, has access to quality healthcare. We are reducing poverty,
crime, and inequality. And we are taking a step towards creating a more
inclusive, equitable society.
It is morally sound
Moreover, supporting NHI is a moral imperative. Every South
African deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their income or
social status. NHI can help to ensure that no one has to choose between paying
for healthcare and putting food on the table. It can help to reduce the
suffering and hardship that many people face on a daily basis.
It is pocket friendly: long-term
NHI can also save money. Currently, South Africans on
private medical insurance spends six (6) times more on healthcare than the
average among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
countries. These were the findings of the HealthMarket Inquiry. This is not sustainable, and it exacerbates the inequality
in the healthcare system. By pooling resources through NHI, we can reduce the
burden on individuals and create a more equitable system that benefits
everyone.
The challenges facing the South African healthcare system
are numerous and complex. Fragmented funding, under-resourcing, and poor
distribution of financial and human resources, amongst others. By pooling
resources and moving towards universal health coverage, we can ensure that
everyone has access to quality healthcare. This will not only save lives but
also improve productivity and create a more competitive business environment. It
will further help to reduce poverty, crime, and inequality, thus building a
more inclusive, equitable society.
A credible system
It is true that, given the fundamental reform that NHI will be to the country, disagreements will take place. We will have divergent views about the best strategies for the NHI implementation. However, the battle of ideas must centre around modalities to implement NHI, not on arguments for or against the system. This is a well proven system with full backing from the World Health Organization. The road ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, and
there will be bumps along the way. However, as the Chinese proverb says,
"If you want to fully deliberate before taking a step, you'll spend your
entire life on one leg." It is time to take the first step towards a more
equitable and inclusive healthcare system in South Africa.
In conclusion, supporting NHI is our patriotic duty, each of
us. By contributing to a national fund that pays for everyone's healthcare
needs, we are helping to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous South
Africa. We are creating a more inclusive, equitable society and reducing
poverty, crime, and inequality. We cannot afford to delay the implementation of
NHI any longer. The time to act is now.
